The U.K. will begin adjusting certain coronavirus restrictions this week, with quarantine measures to be enforced for anyone travelling into the country, and a July 1 target for the reopening of the hospitality industry and other public places, including cinemas.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s pre-recorded televised address on Sunday night has been highly anticipated over the last week as the U.K. lockdown, first enforced on March 23, enters its eighth week. Boris Johnson has scrapped an air bridge agreement with Spain and reimposed quarantine measures on tourists re-entering Britain from the European country.

It comes after the Spanish health minister reported 971 new infections of coronavirus on Thursday – the biggest daily spike since the lockdown in the country was eased.

The change in policy from the government will mean any tourist returning to the UK from Spain will be requested to self-isolate for a 14-day period, or risk being fined by the authorities. It takes effect from midnight.

The plans of thousands of British holidaymakers are under threat as Spain continues to wrestle with a surge in coronavirus infections. 

On Thursday, Totana, a town of 32,000 in the region of Murcia, was placed in lockdown after a spike in cases linked to a nightclub, while Catalonia and Malaga have also seen recent rises.

The UK Government is due to reassess its “travel corridors” over the weekend and there have been rumours a fresh quarantine could be introduced for travellers returning from Spain.

Airlines call for joint US-European testing scheme

Major airlines have asked for a joint coronavirus testing programme, so that travel may resume between the US and Europe.

The owner of British Airways and United Airlines are among the carriers that have signed a letter to US and European Union leaders.

Currently travel between Europe and the US is largely barred.

Carriers are struggling to survive as the coronavirus pandemic has severely disrupted global travel.

Beaches in Barcelona reached capacity over the weekend, despite pleas from local authorities for people to stay at home as Covid-19 cases rose in the region.

Earlier on Sunday, authorities urged 96,000 residents of three Catalan towns to stay at home, as part of a tightening of Covid-19 restrictions. This came after residents in Barcelona were on Friday advised to leave their home only for essential trips.

However, thousands ignored the stay-at-home calls. Barceloneta beach, a favourite among tourists, reached capacity on Sunday and had to be closed as bathers queued
