British holidaymakers are flocking to Greece in lieu of Spain as the busiest month for summer holidays gets underway.

The chairman of Sunvil Holiday Group, Noel Josephides has reported a sudden rise in enquiries for ‘last-minute, flight-only’ bookings to Greece, and not from the company’s usual 50-plus demographic. “We know they are people who were likely to go to Spain,” he told iNews.

It comes as Europe’s largest tour operator Tui extended the cancellation of all UK holidays to the Spanish Balearic Islands and Canary Islands until August 10 and all holidays to mainland Spain until August

Grant Shapps among British holidaymakers facing quarantine on return from Spain

Transport secretary Grant Shapps is among the British holidaymakers currently in Spain who will have to quarantine on their return. 

Ministers reimposed restrictions on travel from Spain, including its islands, on Saturday night following new outbreaks of coronavirus that prompted fears of a second wave of infections. This has thrown thousands of holidaymakers’ plans into disarray.

Ireland excludes British travellers from quarantine-free ‘green list’

British holidaymakers are subject to a 14-day quarantine in Ireland as the UK was excluded from the country’s travel ‘green list’. 

The 15 countries Ireland has deemed safe to travel to include: Malta, Finland, Norway, Italy, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Slovakia, Greece, Greenland, Gibraltar, Monaco and San Marin. These destinations have similar or lower rates of coronavirus cases to Ireland.

Portugal, Spain, France and the US are among the other countries popular with Irish travellers that were excluded from the list.

British holidaymakers offered reassurance over cancelled trips

Britons who are issued refund credit notes for cancelled package holidays will get their money back even if a travel firm collapses, transport secretary Grant Shapps confirmed today. 

The Government will underwrite credit notes for customers whose trips are, or have been, disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. 

The protection will be backdated to March 10 and will extend to September 30. Travellers will be able to cash in or use their refunds up until September 30, 2021.

British Airways retires entire 747 fleet after travel downturn

British Airways has said it will retire all of its Boeing 747s as it suffers from the sharp travel downturn.

The UK airline is the world’s largest operator of the jumbo jets, with 31 in the fleet.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm we are proposing to retire our entire 747 fleet with immediate effect,” a BA spokesman told the BBC.
