HONG KONG (Reuters) – Casinos in the world’s biggest gambling hub Macau are staring at heavy losses for the second quarter, with “not much hope” for a near-term recovery as a resurgence in coronavirus cases muddies the outlook for when China will reinstate travel visas.

Visitors from greater China make up for over 90% of Macau’s tourists, but given travel has dried up amid the health crisis, Morgan Stanley warns casinos in the special administrative region could rack up losses of $1 billion over April to June.

Chinese authorities have reimposed some travel restrictions in the capital Beijing as they work to contain a new coronavirus outbreak.

As reopenings from Europe to Latin America continue, the resurgence in China, which appeared to have largely contained the virus, highlighted expert calls for vigilance in the fight against the pandemic.

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities were reimposing some travel restrictions in the capital Tuesday as they worked to contain a new coronavirus outbreak and prevent it spreading more widely in a country that previously appeared to have largely contained the virus.

China easing airline access amid conflict with Washington

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese regulators said Thursday more foreign airlines will be allowed to fly to China as anti-coronavirus controls ease but it was unclear whether the change will defuse a fresh conflict with the Trump administration over air travel.

The announcement came after Washington said Wednesday it would bar four Chinese airlines from the United States because Beijing was failing to allow United Airlines and Delta Air Lines to resume flights to China.

Marriott reopens all hotels in China as travel rebounds

Marriott has reopened all of its hotels in China and the group says it has seen a recovery in business travel.

The world’s third largest hotel chain has 350 outlets across China and says that occupancy rate is now at 40%.

Marriott gave an upbeat statement on Monday about its business in China as it emerges from coronavirus lockdowns.

Last week it said the financial impact from the pandemic has been more severe for the hotel chain than 9/11 and the 2008 financial crisis combined.
