Trump blames spike in COVID cases on protests, increased travel and cases from Mexico, even as experts point to early reopenings

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Wednesday blamed a dramatic uptick in U.S. coronavirus cases on young people who attended nationwide protests over police brutality, summer holidays, a “substantial increase in travel” and migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, even though his own advisers have also attributed the surge to some states’ early reopenings.

Surges across the country have led to 10 states setting seven-day records for new cases while five states saw a record number of deaths over that period, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins data through late Tuesday.

Britain turns to Portugal for Covid tests that could prevent disease spread and deaths despite ban on travel to country

Britain has turned to Portugal for a mass screening Covid-19 test that can prevent the spread of the disease and help reduce the death rate despite the UK banning travel to the country.

 British officials have met with the Portuguese scientists at the Algarve biomedical centre which has developed a method of testing ten times as many people for a fifth of the price using the same laboratory equipment as now.  

It means potential outbreaks in the population and asymptomatic carriers can be detected far earlier than at present for a fraction of the price, enabling public health officials

Myrtle Beach mayor nixes shutdown as tourist COVID cases increase

As more communities say they have coronavirus cases tied to Grand Strand trips, Myrtle Beach’s mayor called the reports “disheartening” and rejected calls for closing tourist activities.

I think it’s very unfair,” Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune said.

Counties in Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky have publicly announced or confirmed to The Sun News outbreaks after recent travel to Myrtle Beach. While timelines for those outbreaks line to trips to South Carolina, some on Facebook have questioned whether the people were infected during their Myrtle Beach visit or if they picked it up somewhere else.
