Bookings to Greece surge as British holidaymakers flee Spain

British holidaymakers are flocking to Greece in lieu of Spain as the busiest month for summer holidays gets underway.

The chairman of Sunvil Holiday Group, Noel Josephides has reported a sudden rise in enquiries for ‘last-minute, flight-only’ bookings to Greece, and not from the company’s usual 50-plus demographic. “We know they are people who were likely to go to Spain,” he told iNews.

Grant Shapps among British holidaymakers facing quarantine on return from Spain

Transport secretary Grant Shapps is among the British holidaymakers currently in Spain who will have to quarantine on their return. 

Ministers reimposed restrictions on travel from Spain, including its islands, on Saturday night following new outbreaks of coronavirus that prompted fears of a second wave of infections. This has thrown thousands of holidaymakers’ plans into disarray.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office changed its advice to warn against all but essential travel to mainland Spain.

British holidaymakers offered reassurance over cancelled trips

Britons who are issued refund credit notes for cancelled package holidays will get their money back even if a travel firm collapses, transport secretary Grant Shapps confirmed today. 

The Government will underwrite credit notes for customers whose trips are, or have been, disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. 

The protection will be backdated to March 10 and will extend to September 30. Travellers will be able to cash in or use their refunds up until September 30, 2021.

Holidaymakers left confused as only a third of Government’s ‘travel corridors’ offer unhindered travel

The Government has been accused of confusing holidaymakers after it emerged only 25 of the 74 destinations on their “travel corridor” list are fully accessible to English visitors without restrictions.

A study by the PC Agency and Audiencenet has established that just a third of the countries or territories do not have some form of quarantine, closed borders or restrictions that might impede English holidaymakers.

It follows the Department for Transport’s (DfT) announcement of 74 destinations where it was lifting the requirement for anyone arriving from them to quarantine for 14 days in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
