TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan is bracing for a surge in the number of coronavirus infections after new daily cases exceeded 1,000 for the first time, a week after the start of a national travel campaign to revive the tourism industry.

The country had 1,264 new cases on Wednesday, according to a tally by national broadcaster NHK, surpassing the previous record of 981, with infections spreading rapidly not only in Tokyo, but also in other regions including remote islands.

Trump blames spike in COVID cases on protests, increased travel and cases from Mexico, even as experts point to early reopenings

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Wednesday blamed a dramatic uptick in U.S. coronavirus cases on young people who attended nationwide protests over police brutality, summer holidays, a “substantial increase in travel” and migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, even though his own advisers have also attributed the surge to some states’ early reopenings.

Pence cancels plans to travel to Florida and Arizona as coronavirus cases spike

WASHINGTON — Vice President Mike Pence has canceled events in Florida and Arizona as coronavirus cases spike in those states. 

A spokesperson for President Donald Trump’s campaign confirmed to USA TODAY the events, which included stops as part of Pence’s “Faith in America” tour, were canceled “out of an abundance of caution” as cases climb in Florida and Arizona. 

On Tuesday, Pence was scheduled to give remarks at a “Faith in America” event in Tucson and to meet with Gov. Doug Ducey about the COVID-19 response.

White House eyes travel from Mexico as source of virus spike

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is floating a theory that travel from Mexico may be contributing to a new wave of coronavirus infections, rather than states’ efforts to reopen their economies.
